London Shido-kan Karate Dojo
Originally opened in 1989 as a Shotokan dojo by Sensei Larry Bowlby 3rd Dan, London Shido-kan has had its name since 2004 after officially converting to the Shido-kan Shorin-ryu style of karate
How it happened…
In February 1999 , Larry Bowlby was searching for a traditional Okinawan style of karate with the hope of further researching the roots of the Japanese Shotokan karate style. Larry was very fortunate and happy to find Sensei Roy Paul- 5th Dan , in Guelph Ontario who is a direct student of Hanshi Seikichi Iha 10th Dan , the founder and chief instructor of the North American Beikoku Shido-kan Karate Do Association. Sensei Paul invited Larry and his students to a seminar in April 1999 featuring Hanshi Iha , after which Larry decided to look deeper into the style and organization.
And then…
In the spring of 2004, Larry had a meeting with his black belts where the consensus was reached to convert the London dojo completely over to the Shido-kan organization under the direction of Sensei Roy Paul – Shido –kan Canada Karate’s Director and his wife, Sensei Margaret Paul who is also a 5th Dan. During the past five years many black belts at the London dojo have re-certified their rank at examinations presided over by Hanshi Iha and a panel of senior black belts ranging from 5th to 8th Dan
So now…
Larry and his students enjoy an ongoing relationship with the Guelph and Waterloo Ontario dojos and the Honbu (main) dojo in Lansing Michigan.
